In order to obtain this measurement, the gem is placed on a scale sensitive enough to calculate to a thousandth of a gram. There are 100 points in every carat and 5 carats in every gram. A diamond weighing half a gram would most oten be expressed as 2.50ct, meaning two-and-a-half carats. A diamond weighing seventy-six points would be written as 0.76ct. Most discovered diamonds are so distorted by imperfections that they are not considered “gem quality.” Larger, higher quality diamonds require more perfect conditions to form, making them extremely rare. For this reason, small weight variations between diamonds can mean large diferences in cost. The most important thing to remember about a diamond’s carat weight is that it does not necessarily indicate its size. Although a well proportioned diamond may appear smaller than a wider cut diamond of the same weight, it will have more sparkle and brilliance giving it a larger overall presence. *measurements are approximated based on ideal cut round brilliant diamonds Visit Us Today - Schedule an Appt www.hlgross.com
