How to Register and Start With NDIS in Newcastle

For individuals living with a disability in Newcastle or Lake Macquarie, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides life-changing access to tailored support. However, the process of registering and starting can feel overwhelming. This guide will walk you through each step—from eligibility to planning—so you can begin your NDIS journey with clarity and confidence.

Step 1: Check Your Eligibility for the NDIS

Before applying, you must meet the following eligibility requirements:

  • Age: Be under 65 years old when applying

  • Residency: Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa

  • Disability: Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to perform daily tasks without support

If you meet these criteria, you may proceed with your NDIS application. If you're unsure, contact EnableU for guidance.

Step 2: Submit Your Access Request

To apply for the NDIS, you can:

  • Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110 and request an Access Request Form

  • Download the form from the NDIS website and submit it via email or post

  • Work with your GP, allied health professional, or a service like EnableU to complete and submit the form

The form requires details about your condition, functional capacity, and medical history. You’ll need supporting documentation from healthcare professionals.

Step 3: Wait for an Outcome

The NDIA will assess your application and respond in writing. If approved, you’ll receive an invitation to attend a planning meeting. If denied, you can request a review or appeal the decision.

Step 4: Attend Your Planning Meeting

Your NDIS planning meeting is crucial. It determines what supports and funding you’ll receive in your NDIS plan. You can choose to meet with:

  • A Local Area Coordinator (LAC) in Newcastle

  • NDIA Planner

  • Support Coordinator or advocate (EnableU can assist with this)

Come prepared to discuss:

  • Your goals (e.g. improving mobility, gaining employment, accessing community)

  • Your current supports

  • Your daily challenges and needs

Step 5: Receive and Review Your NDIS Plan

Once your plan is approved, you’ll be notified via mail or the myGov portal. Your plan may include:

  • Core Supports: Daily care, transport, community access

  • Capacity Building: Therapy, life skills, employment support

  • Capital Supports: Equipment and home modifications

Step 6: Choose Your NDIS Providers

You have the freedom to choose which service providers to work with. Registered providers like EnableU offer:

  • Allied health (OT, physio)

  • In-home care and assistance

  • Support coordination

  • Community engagement services

Step 7: Start Using Your Plan

Once you’ve signed service agreements with providers, you can begin accessing services. You may self-manage, have your plan managed by the NDIA, or work with a plan manager.
