Use art to start a conversation on facebook
Find some images of old paintings that cover the line of business you are in and add them to your posts. Ask questions about the paintings and seek opinions to get comments. I use images of old fly fishing paintings to start a conversation with fishermen for my fly fishing company's social media accounts. This tactic works well in facebook, Google+, Pinterest and LinkedIn. On the example below I asked a question about what size fishing rod would work best in this rocky river? I asked for opinions on the fisherman's tactic of using the big rock in the foreground as cover and if wearing a light colored hat was a good idea. I received lots of comments and was able to make contact with many fisherman, some of which became new customers. Many traditional British pubs use old hunting and fishing paintings that they find in country sale rooms to decorate the inside of their bars. The camera on my phone has come in very handy for finding new content.

Find some old magazines from the 1950's or earlier. The art work on the covers were normally of a very high standard. Technology did not make it economical to print color photographs at that period in time so artists were employed to produce eye catching covers. Ask questions about the art work. Seek opinions. When I used the girl with the red hair I asked for opinions about the fishing rod and reel she was shown using. When I used the picture of the fisherman trying to tie on a small fishing fly in the middle of the river I asked what tips and tricks people had for making this task easier. My understanding is that you are allowed to do this under copyright law as it is deemed to be "fair usage" so long as you do not suggest that these images are yours and if you can, acknowledge where the images came from.

Most images from before 1920 are out of copyright so you can reproduce them in your social media marketing posts. I like using them as it shows how fishing has changed over the years, especially what clothing people used to wear and what types of hats were in fashion. No fly fisherman would dream of wearing a suit and bowler hat when he went out on the water today. He would be laughed at and considered mad or very eccentric.
