WHICH GODS MIGHT EXIST?

    God-Talk Might Be a Way of Expressing Our Spiritual Dynamics .

    The question of the existence or non-existence of gods
has not been hotly debated for many years in UU circles.
This must be because most UU have decided there are no gods.
At least, that the traditional ideas of gods
do not correspond to anything in reality.

    But contrary to the expectations of many traditional religious people,
the abandonment of belief in the traditional gods
has not led to the abandonment of concern
for matters relating to the human spirit.
Most traditional religions simply fall apart
if belief in their gods is abandoned.

    This series of World-Wide Secular Sermons
addresses the basic questions of theology
in ways that can be understood by human beings everywhere
and in all times of future human history.

    The disbeliefs expressed will probably be embraced by most UUs,
but since there is wide consensus among UUs,
these questions would probably not be addressed
in a typical UU sermon, delivered to a local UU congregation.

    But most of the world has never heard of UUism.
Almost all of the world's religions
have supernatural beings or forces central to their belief systems.
Thus, most of the people of the world
also believe that giving up belief in various gods
will only lead to loss of all religious faith.

    Therefore, it is very important to make explicit
what we Unitarian Universalists do not believe.
We can show people who have known traditional, theistic religions
that the intelligent exploration of human spirituality
does not depend on any forms of belief in gods.
