Working with a Grid DS-Client (Windows)
In high-performance environments, you can maximize DS-Client processing and distribute the load across two or more computers using a Grid DS-Client configuration. In this configuration, the DS-Client software is installed on multiple computers called nodes that are configured to use the same database.
• The Grid DS-Client is composed of one main node and one or more leaf nodes. Each node in the grid configuration, including the main node, performs its own backup and restore activities.
• The main node accepts DS-User connections and manages all running activities to ensures that the leaf nodes do not run conflicting activities. The leaf nodes perform activities as instructed by the main node.
• If the main node fails, all activities running on the node stop. However, activities on the leaf nodes continue to run. A new main node is selected from the running leaf nodes.
• If the leaf node fails, all activities running on that node will stop. However, activities on the main node and the other leaf nodes will continue to run.
NOTE: For detailed instructions on how to install a Grid DS-Client, see the Client Software Installation Guide.
Since the DS-User can only connect to the main node, which is chosen randomly from the running nodes, ensure that the DS-User is configured with the IP address of each node in the Grid DS-Client. For more information, see
“Configuring the initialization settings”.
NOTE: This is not necessary if DS-User and all DS-Client nodes are in the same subnet. By default, a DS-User can see all running DS-Clients in the same subnet.
For Grid DS-Clients, the database server saves a copy of the DS-Client databases in the DS-Client buffer of the node that performs the Daily Admin or Weekly Admin activities. By default, this folder is:
C:\Program Files\CloudBackup\DS-Client\db_buffer
The Daily / Weekly Admin activity is allocated by the main node to a leaf node with a lower load.
When you connect to a Grid DS-Client, a Grid menu is activated and the following dialog boxes will have an additional option to select by the Node ID:
• Activity Log Viewer (Logs > Activity Log)
• Load Summary (Reports menu > Load Summary)
• DS-Client System Status (Setup > System Activities > System)
• DS-Client Advanced Configurations (Setup > Configuration > Advanced tab)
