DS-Client Help : Configuring the DS-Client : Configuring the DS-Client settings : Configuring the default settings

Configuring the default settings
You can configure the default settings that will apply to all new backups. You can still change the settings individually for each backup if required.
To configure the default settings:
1. On the Setup menu, click Configuration.
2. Click the Defaults tab.
3. Under Generations setup, do the following:
a) In the Maximum online generations box, enter the maximum number of online generations of a backup that should be retained.
b) In the Default Retention Rule box, select the default retention rule for new backups.
NOTE:  For information on how to configure a retention rule, see “Configuring a retention rule”.
4. To back up the file permissions, under Backup options, select the Backup permissions check box.
5. Under Open files, do the following:
a) In the Default operation box, specify how a backup should handle an open file during backup. The options are as follows:
Try deny write – Attempts to open the file in Deny write mode. If this fails because the file is already open, the file is placed in Allow write mode.
Deny write – Prevents any other process from writing to the file while the DS-Client has it open. The DS-Client does not back up the file if another process has already opened it for write. However, you can instruct the DS-Client to retry backing up the open file.
Prevent write – Attempts to open the file in Deny write mode. If this fails because the file is already open, the file is opened in Allow write mode and locked to prevent any other process from writing to the file. This ensures that the most recent version of the file is backed up.
Allow write – Allows another process to read or write to the file without restrictions. Since other applications can write to the file while it is being backed up, this can affect file consistency.
NOTE:  If the file is opened in another application, it will not be backed up unless the backup is using VSS. The Activity Log will display an error. To back up an open file, enable the VSS option for that particular backup.
b) In the Retry times box, enter the number of times that you want the DS-Client to attempt to back up the file.
c) In the Retry interval box, enter the interval, in seconds, between retries.
6. Under Backup schedule, select the default schedule for new backups. To create a new schedule, click New.
NOTE:  For information on how to configure a schedule, see “Configuring a schedule”.
7. To configure the default notification settings for new backups, do the following:
a) Under Notification, click Add/Modify, and then do the following:
b) To send an email notification, select E-Mail. and then do the following:
1. To send the email notification to the DS-Client administrator, select Administrator.
2. To send an email to another recipient, select Other, and then specify the recipients email address.
3. To send detailed backup information, select the Detailed notification check box.
4. To include a detailed file-level backup log as an attachment, select the Attach detail log check box.
5. To send the email notification in HTML format, select the Send E-Mail using HTML format check box.
c) To send a pager notification, select Pager. The notification will be sent to the pager account configured for the DS-Client.
d) To send a broadcast notification, select Broadcast. Select the server containing the messenger service to which you want to send the message.
NOTE:  Broadcast notifications to domains or workgroups are limited to 128 characters.
e) To send an event notification, elect Event. Select the server on which you want the notification to be recorded in the Event Log.
f) In the Completion box, specify under what conditions a notification will be sent, and click OK. The options are as follows:
All – Notification will be sent under all conditions.
Successful – Notification will be sent if an activity is completed successfully without errors or warnings.
Completed with warnings – Notification will be sent if an activity is completed with at least one warning event.
Completed with errors – Notification will be sent if an activity is completed with at least one error event.
Incomplete – Notification will be sent if an activity is not completed successfully.
8. Click Next.
NOTE:  The email option is available only if the DS-Client has been configured for email notifications. For more information, see “Configuring the notification settings”.
9. Under Data Compression, select the default compression type that will be applied to new backups. The options are as follows:
LZOP – A faster compression than ZLIB, but comes at the expense of less compression. This is a good option when the network is not the bottleneck.
ZLIB – Produces better compression than LZOP, but will take more time. This is a good option when the bottleneck is the network.
10. Click OK.
