Configuring scanned shares
After you run a share discovery process, a share list is generated with the credentials to connect to each share. Discovered shares are automatically enabled or disabled depending on if they are already included in other shares or if a connection cannot be established. Each subsequent share discovery process adds new shares to the discovered share list. You can manually remove specific shares.
NOTE: The Clean shares list option applies only to shares with a scanned size of 0 from the last scan shares process.
The scan process is applied to the list of shares found by the discovery process, which automatically disables shares in the following scenarios:
• The share is covered by other shares.
• There are not enough credentials to retrieve the information from the share.
• The share is not supposed to be scanned (e.g. read-only media such as DVD).
NOTE: You can manually enable or disable the status of a share.
By default, the credentials used to discover the share are set as the scan credentials for the share by the discovery process. However, the credentials used for scanning can be changed for shares from DS-User.
To speed up the scanning process, you can configure the system to skip files that are smaller than a specific size. The number of scanning threads is also configurable to provide scalability.
The scan process can be scheduled or started on demand. The best practice is to schedule it to run several times over a period, such as a few weeks, to get more accurate statistical information on data growth and changes. This helps with the estimation of storage and other requirements before going into production.
To configure scanned shares:
1. On the Tools menu, point to LAN Storage Discovery, and then click Scan Shares.
2. To display the shares on the LAN that were discovered by the share discovery process, click Share List, and then do the following:
a) To allow share to be scanned, select the share, and then click Enable.
b) To remove a share from the list, click Remove.
c) To remove a share from the scan process, select the share, and then click Disable.
NOTE: The share discovery process automatically disables shares that it detects to be redundant or inaccessible.
d) To configure the reparse point settings for a share, select the share, click Follow Reparse Point, and then select one of the following options:
• Follow – Follows reparse points in a scanned share. A reparse point is a link to a different location (directory or device). This results in a larger amount scanned.
• Don’t follow – Ignores reparse points in a scanned share.
• Reverse follow setting – Inverts the share setting.
e) Click Close.
3. To skip files smaller than a specified size, select the Skip files smaller than check box, and then specify the size of the files to be skipped.
4. To remove files smaller than the specified size from the database, select the Delete scanned files from DB check box.
5. In the Threads box, enter the number of the threads to use for the scan.
6. Click Scan.
NOTE: The first scan processes all shares. In subsequent scans, you can enable or disable shares. For example, if you want to do a quick scan of only one share.
