You can use the LAN Storage Discovery Tool to analyze your storage by scanning the shares on your network. This is useful to identify duplicate files on the network or shares that are contained within other shares. LAN Storage Discovery reports can be generated using the information from the file summary.

Analyzing your LAN storage before performing the initial backup is important to provide a clear view of the data on your network. The most important information is the redundancy (duplication) and frequency of data changes.

To analyze your LAN, you must first discover the shares using a list of credentials you provide and then select the share list you want to scan. Tools to manage and monitor the discovery and scan processes are also provided.

The scan process is run by the DS-Client and can be scheduled. You can generate several reports to analyze the scanned information for duplication, data growth trends, file access, and file type distribution. You can also generate summary and detailed reports as well as export the reports to a file.
