VELMA
She of the caged libido. Raised in an incredibly repressed environment by a father who was a religious zealot unable to master his own biological drives, Velma grew into a traumatized adult. Her personality is trapped in a repressive reaction formation which manifests itself in the form of a repetition compulsion. In a certain sense, Velma is an unconscious existentialist: Her project is the pursuit and apprehension of an object for libidinal cathexis. The thought of a stable male partner, however, is frightening to Velma in that such a relationship would oblige a transference from her relationship with her father, which is exactly what she does not want. Yet she finds herself helplessly in need of male attentions as prerequisite for passion. As a result, her libido, one cathected, flees in retreat to the refuge of repression at which point the cycle begins anew. Her career as a hair stylist and beautician is ideal for maintaining this state of being for it allows her to spend that time not directly involved in pursuing an object vicariously involved in the pursuits of others and to thereby retain her singular focus.
Mike is her mirror, the yang to her yin. The overwhelming need of each is perfectly counterbalanced by that of the other: together they form an absolute zero of total inertia. To such a state of being, replete, as it must be, with inexorable entropy, both Velma and Mike find themselves simultaneously repulsed and attracted.
