| USNA to Welcome Class of 2025 and Families |
The U.S. Naval Academy is set to welcome the approximately 1,200 members of the Class of 2025 over two Induction Days (I-Days) on 29 and 30 June. While the prospective midshipmen will make their way through legendary I-Day stations including uniform issue, Reef Points introduction, mandatory inoculations and the shearing of too-long locks, their families will enjoy a Plebe Parent Information Fair sponsored by the U.S. Naval Academy Alumni Association and Foundation. The fair features food trucks, live music, photo ops and 15 tents staffed by AA&F personnel and partners, eager to connect parents to programs and services that will support their families during their midshipman’s Naval Academy years and beyond. Parents will also have the opportunity to hear a briefing from the Superintendent, Commandant and other senior Yard personnel. The swearing-in will take place at 1900 on Wednesday, 30 June. |

| McDonough ’94 Now 89th Commandant of Midshipmen |
The beginning of June marked the change of command for the U.S. Naval Academy Commandant of Midshipmen. RADM T.R. Buchanan ’92, USN, finished his two-year term on the Yard and was relieved by Col James “J.P” McDonough III ’94, USMC. Col McDonough assumed his duties as the 89th Commandant of Midshipmen during a ceremony located in T-Court. Prior to his arrival at the Academy, he served as executive assistant to the Deputy Commandant of Plans, Policies and Operations at the U.S. Marine Corps Headquarters in the Pentagon. McDonough earned a master’s degree in modeling, virtual environments and simulation from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2005 and graduated with distinction from the Eisenhower School for National Security and Resource Strategy at National Defense University in 2014. Bravo Zulu to both RADM Buchanan and Col McDonough! |

| 24 Navy Swimmers Qualify for Olympic Trials |
A record 24 Naval Academy swimmers qualified for the USA Swimming Olympic Team Trials in Omaha, NE, earlier this month. MIDN Garrett McGovern ’24 and ENS Luke Johnson ’21, USN, placed first and second, respectively, in the 800 freestyle timed final to highlight Navy's efforts during Wave I of the USA Swimming Olympic Team Trials. Both opted not to swim in Wave II, choosing instead to focus on their next NCAA swimming season and new naval career, respectively. While three Navy swimmers automatically qualified for the more competitive Wave II, MIDN Sydney Harrington ’22, ENS Chris Bondarowicz ’21, USN, and MIDN Ethan Tack ’22, none advanced to the finals. |

| Cavanaugh ’90 Returns to Okinawa to Take Command |
Marine air power in Japan welcomed a familiar face as its new leader 11 June at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma on Okinawa. BGen Brian Cavanaugh ’90, USMC, took command of the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing from BGen Christopher McPhillips during a flight-line ceremony with MV-22B Ospreys and F-35B Lightning II stealth fighters parked nearby. Cavanaugh, a Bronze Star recipient, is no stranger to 1st MAW. He has held every rank in his 30-year career, save for second lieutenant, while serving under its banner, he said. “I understand that 1st MAW, through the work of Gen. McPhillips and his team, is ready to fight now and we will continue to be ready to fight now,” said Cavanaugh, who has been selected for promotion to major general. “All I ask of the Marines and sailors is to be ready.” |
