Is the net a nation? I think not. The net is all about communication. It is communal, but is not a community.

Not even a collection of communities. What it IS is a great place for the mingling of information, the trading of ideas and like Jeep mentioned, a forum for everyone to voice their opinion. The net as a communal political voice is not what I doubt, but view the net as virtual living space.

I see the net as definitely essential in the coming together of all cultures, races and religions. Its ignorance of gender and race eliminate many of the problems of 'reality', but life still occurs in 'reality'. People are social beings, and to create a virtual nation in which citizens sit in front of a cancer causing CRT, is not the way to go. We will become a people of lazy couch potatoes, who never leave the house, except for the people we pay to go and deliver our online purchases.

The net will be orchestral in tying the world together, which is what humans need, not just spiritually or politically, but physically. We need to push our borders beyond the Blue Planet and expand our knowledge of the Universe itself. But this cannot be accomplished until we break down our borders that have been setup within our own planet. The internet will be the information infrastructure of the next New World, which people will explore and share with us in real time, in the spirit of Columbus and Magellan.
