Thanks to improvements in RealAudio technology we can now experience reasonable quality sound and video streamed over the Internet. This means we can watch it or hear it as it downloads, killing the wait and enabling live broadcasts.

Never one to miss out on a good opportunity C|NET have introduced their three times daily news program (as a part of NEWS.COM) as have several news based competitors. We also have weekly interviews from a wide variety of sources, live concerts and more....

Great isn't it? Yes, well its not bad, it certainly improves the internet experience and it is nice hearing people's voices. But at the moment apart from the low cost international benefits of internet radio there is little to distinguish it from normal radio apart from worse quality sound and the occasional network delay.

So although C|NET Radio has an international audience for a tiny fraction of the cost of the BBC World service, it has little else going for it. Is low cost enough to make it worthwhile? Maybe, but we could do so much more with current technologies so why not?

What is missing from the RealAudio broadcasts is a certain degree of interactivity. You just sit there listening. The RealAudio medium has no way of including any "clickability". Imagine being able to interact in 'RealTime' with your own voice or just with a mouse on the issues being discussed in a live interview....now that's exciting. What do you think? Mail us and we can interact!
