Education in the UK is in trouble. The huge attention its getting in the election campaign is a sure sign of that.

Younger children are getting a lot of attention in the debates. But what about higher education?

Especially in technology Europe lags behind the US and Japan, educationally, industrially and in every other way. The UK is at the forefront in Europe, but then that isn't saying much.

It all starts with a good education. There are a lot of good technical degrees out there for engineering and so on. But Computing is getting neglected. A lot of Computing degrees try and attract applicants by offering the latest technologies 'Java, Java, Java' is their gathering call this year. It was Virtual Reality last year. But they go out of date as quickly as they arrived. These degrees need to be rooted in good theory.

But even then they ignore so much. Maybe it should be covered in a separate degree but some people should be qualified to think about the future implications of technology.

Socially. Politically. Economically.

Some people have got to do it, but who's going to be?

You?
