Requesting a galley
Issues with Mac
Miscellaneous
How do I request a galley?
You can request a galley from NetGalley’s Public Catalog. Find the title you want, and click the “Request” button. You will need to login (or register if you are a new user) to request a title. When the publisher approves your request, the galley will appear on your home page when you login.
Can I request galleys by category?
You can search for galleys in the Public Catalog by category, and then request individual titles.
Currently you cannot request multiple galleys at one time. However, you can post your should provide your subject/category/genre interests in your
Public Bio so that publishers can find you when they invite NetGalley members to view their titles.
What is the best way to view a list of galleys from a particular publisher?
To view a complete list of titles by publisher, click "Browse Catalog". From there you can either sort the catalog by publisher or click "Browse titles by publisher."
I want a printed galley. Why can’t I request one?
When you click on a title, you are seeing the reading options the publisher has enabled for this title. Many publishers choose not to offer print galleys through NetGalley.
Publishers can choose these options when uploading a title to NetGalley:
- Enable readers to download a secure PDF to their computer or Sony Reader using Adobe Digital Editions
- Enable reader to read online using NetGalley's web-based reader
- Email a PDF to a reader’s Kindle
- Allow readers to email the publisher directly to Request Other formats
I don't like digital galleys. What else can I do with NetGalley?
If you prefer to read print galleys, you can use NetGalley as a supplement to your printed galleys and as a tool for managing your review process:
- Preview and assess the galleys digitally — to decide whether or not you'd like to read the entire book as a printed galley
- Search within the text quickly and easily
- Notify publishers of your review (or you can tell them you've declined to review)
Why can’t I view the Downloaded Galley?
To read the Downloaded Galley on your computer, SONY Reader, or other device, you will need Adobe Digital Editions (free software). Here’s where to get it: http://www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/. Also, be sure that Adobe Digital Editions is selected as the preferred program for these two file types: .acsm and .epub files. To do this, go to your Control Panel and select Default Programs then Set Associations.
Why is it taking so long for the PDF to show up on my Kindle?
There shouldn’t be much of a delay from the time NetGalley emails the PDF to the time it appears on your Kindle. Here are some things to check:
- Double check the kindle email address is correct on the My Profiles/Contact Info page - could just have been sent to someone else’s kindle
- Make sure Kindle wireless is “on” – without that the file can’t be transferred.
- If the above two things are looking good and kindle@netgalley.com is one of your approved email addresses, then you may need to restart your Kindle. On the Kindle, go to Menu, Settings, then at Settings, click Menu again and you’ll see Restart. Click that and after it goes through its stuff the file should be sent to the Kindle.
Can I read a galley on my iPhone, iTouch, Blackberry or other smart phone?
Yes, if the publisher has chosen to enable an Open (DRM-free) file, then the galley can be read on all devices that read PDFs, as well as iPhone, iTouch, Blackberry and other smart phones. Here’s how: The reading option “Download Galley” button will appear in the “Read Galley” column on the Title Details page. When you click that button, a pop-up window will tell you if the file is Protected or Open. If it is Open, then download the galley to your computer and then transfer or email the file to your smart phone.
Can I read a NetGalley title through the Kindle app on my iPod Touch or iPhone?
The way that NetGalley sends a galley to a Kindle is through the name@kindle.com email. That email address is created when you have an actual Kindle device (not when you use the Kindle app on a different device). Since NetGalley can only email the Kindle galley to that address (name@kindle.com), you need an actual Kindle device in order to view a galley.
I got the message "This document requires global security policy to be disabled" when trying to download an Open PDF file. I can't find any option to disable this policy.
If you are downloading an Open PDF (DRM-free) file, you may see this alert. To disable this policy and download the PDF, open Adobe Acrobat, go to your Preferences menu at the top of the window and uncheck "Disable global object security policy."

What do I do when I’m done reading a galley in NetGalley?
NetGalley members (readers) are under no obligation to finish reading a title or write a review. If you do choose to write a review, you can use NetGalley to share the review with the publisher. Your review is shared with the publisher as a courtesy — but the content and publishing rights for that review belong solely to you. Most publishers will appreciate if you also include a link or other information with the review that says where the review will be published. You can also use NetGalley to let the publisher know that you are declining to review.
I started reading a galley after clicking on its title under
New Invitations to View Titles. Now I want to continue reading, but the title isn’t there anymore.
Once you click on the title under New Invitations to View Titles, the invitation is no longer new — so you’ll need to click on My Reviews on the left-hand menu to access the title again.
My Reviews is where you should come to read that title again in the future, and you can also use this section to notify the publisher if you plan to review, and even share your review with the publisher in NetGalley. Here’s how:
- From your home page, click the “My Reviews” link in left column.
- To read the galley, click on the blue title.
- To let the publisher know that you’re interested in writing a review, or to send the review, click on the pencil icon in the Write column.
What browsers does NetGalley support?
