instrumentsmadeoutof ice.ButTerje Isungset,
founderof the IceMusicFestival, says it’s the fact
thatallof the instrumentsareunique that takes
somegettingused to. “Youalwayshaveanew
instrument,”hesays. “They’realsovery fragile,
so ifyouhit them toohard, they’llbreak.”
Makingandusingan ‘icehorn’ (imagine the
cone-shapedpartof agramophoneandyou’re in
therightballpark) israrelyaproblem, Isungset
says,butyouneedbetter-quality ice.And there
areonlya fewplaces thathave ice that really
soundsgood. Ideally, itneeds tobe free from
imperfectionsandhavebeen frozennaturally
(apparently, themovementof riversand lakes
helps tokeepbubblesoutof the ice).
Isungset saysat least twonew instruments
willbe testedat thisyear’s festival: akindof
basscelloandanAfrican-styledrum.Also, for
thefirst timeever, electronicsoundswillbe
mixed inwithsomeof the icemusic.Butdon’t
expectGeilo to turn into theNordic Ibiza.
“Wewant the festival togrowgradually–we
don’twant tobeabig festivalwith thousandsof
people,” Isungsetsays. “Wewant theaudience
feel that they’repartof something special.”
