OBJECT OF DESIRE
Poznan Design
A BENCH THAT CHARGES YOUR LAPTOP
using solar power, a seat resembling a
tree fungal mound or a bus shelter with
hotplates to warm hands on chilly evenings
– these are just some examples of how
innovation is shaping Poznan’s design scene.
“Poznan’s drive to invest in design is
great for young designers like me,” says
Wojtek Janicki, the brains behind the
fungus-shaped urban furniture. “But it also
presents the city as modern and trendy.”
And, apparently, it’s working. Young
creative minds continue to swarm in, and
Poznan design brands, such as Noti (ul. 23
Lutego 16) or Comforty (ul. Stary Browar,
Półwiejska 42), are taking the international
scene by storm.
No other Polish city can match Poznan
when it comes to design. It’s the only one
represented at the prestigious iSaloni fairs,
which took place in Milan in April. Last year,
the School of Form (supported by legendary
trend forecaster Li Edelkoort) opened its
doors to its first intake of 125 students.
Some of that concentrated creativity just
has to rub off. That’s why, during Euro 2012,
football fans in Poznan Fan Zone will not be
sitting on any old seats, but special chairs
contrived by local designers. Foldable and
made from eco-friendly cardboard, the
chair is designed to be carried around the
city during the championships, a unique
souvenir for football fans.
