looking for more than the usual al fresco
drinking or club scene,” explains Chris

Note that there are three things every
night owl in Davao must take to heart:
the curfew for unaccompanied minors
starts at 10pm, the liquor ban for all
establishments kicks in at 2am, and the
city’s famous no-smoking ordinance is to
be observed at all times. At the end of the
month, Davao City will celebrate the 11th
anniversary of its anti-smoking campaign;
it also marks the implementation of a
stricter smoking ban, which prohibits
the use of tobacco products except
in residences, private vehicles, and
designated outdoor smoking areas — in
other words, the quest to making the city
smoke-free is serious business.
Keeping the city clean — from the
urban centers, the coastal areas, to the
lush highlands — is also high on the list
of priorities. There’s a lot to love about
the city’s natural bounty and the kind of
laid-back lifestyle it allows everyone to
have. Locals, myself included, would
like to keep it that way in the face of a
commercial boom that’s just on its early
stages. I’d like, for instance, to always
be able to sail away on a boat in the
late afternoon on any given day, drop
anchor at the Vanishing Island, watch
the sunset while unwinding on the
deck, and make it back home in time
for dinner.
