Our group spent two days in Samut
Songkhram, a province known for its
rustic landscapes and its vast network
of
khlongs
,
or canals. In these riverine
environs we discovered the traditional
Thai way of life. At the villages of
Amphawa and Tha Kha, we saw
hawkers paddling to market in boats
brimming with merchandise. We also
met different sorts of people — sun-
darkened lady vendors, novice monks,
machete-bearing palm-juice gatherers
all of them displaying bright, sunny
Thai smiles. Surely at work here was
the famous
sanuk
the fun-loving,
good-natured disposition that the locals
are blessed with.
