HANG OUT HERE
In Shanghai, there is always something to match your mood. My friends and I love to settle in
at Cantina Agave for the best margaritas in town, chill at Bocado or The Camel, feel the wind at
Kartel’s rooftop, head over to El Coctel for the Black Manhattan, choose our whisky poison at
Constellation or get some rhum shots at Rhumerie Bounty.
For that indie, no frills vibe, there’s Yongkang Lu, a short street dotted with small bars
and restaurants like Le Cafe des Stagiaires. When we want to venture out late into the night,
however, there’s Lola and Craft for some funk, and M1nt and Hollywood for clubbing. If you dare
to stay up long enough to see the sunshine, there’s Shiva and Amber.
BRING OUT
YOUR WALLET
There is always something happening in
Shanghai. Whether you decide to take
a stroll or ride a bike, you are bound to
bump into something interesting. There
still exist independent boutiques selling
tea, curios and clothes. I even found Diane
Von Fursternberg dresses for a third of
the price! You can also catch a musical at
the Shanghai Culture Square, some indie
music acts at Yuyintang, a glass blowing
class at the Shanghai Museum of Glass,
or propanda posters at the Shanghai
Propaganda Poster Art Centre. And if you’re
willing to part with some
kwai,
get some art
at Moganshan Road, which is known for its
countless galleries.
VENTURE BEYOND
Summer is here and the
laowais
(foreigners) and locals troop to the pool to
cool down. This is also the best time to go
on short trips outside the city.
Hangzhou, Suzhou and Moganshan (not
to be mistaken for Moganshan Road!) are
great weekend escapes and will provide a
respite from the heat and city congestion.
Shanghai is a bustling city and has
something to offer everyone. I caught the
Shanghai bug and I’m totally loving it. I
think you will too!
TOURIST STOPS
If you want to do some tai chi, People’s
Park is filled with graceful practitioners
in the early morning. Of course, there are
other staple tourist destinations, like Tian
Zi Fang, which has narrow, winding streets
and curios; Xintiandi, which features dining
and shopping spots set in a reconstructed,
antique building; Nanjing and Huaihai
Roads, where you can shop for just
about any big-name brand; and Yuyuan
Garden, which has massive souvenir
options just outside.
