of doing what I [originally] wanted to be
doing. It’s always about, “I need to get here.
I want to do this.” I just think I’m trying to
hang on to it all now. You want to keep
your own personal thing, mixing it up in
films and playing different characters. You
see performances that you are inspired by. I
wonder if I could even get close to that.
Which character would
that be?
Kenneth Branagh in
My Week with
Marilyn;
I thought it was great because I
know him. What a transformation.
What are you busy with?
Right now, I’m looking at the next film. I’m
hunting for what’s going to get me through
that. I guess you’re always searching for
[something]. At the moment you’re reading
biographies about this guy you have to
play. There is a whole lot of pressure there;
it’s not just you. It’s your own interpretation
of that story but at the same time, this is
someone who existed.
As the Huntsman, Chris captures,
saves and fights with Kristen
Stewart, who plays Snow White
— and faces Charlize Theron, who
plays the evil Queen Ravenna
“There was a fight scene and
Kristen punched me in the nose. I was
like, ‘Not the face, not the face...
,
”
What did your wife think
of the movie?
Once I told her what it was, she was as
excited as I was. It’s universal to everyone,
whether or not you sat and read every
fairy tale.
Maybe because it
seems more for girls
than for boys?
Some of them, [like]
Grimm’s Fairy Tales,
are vicious and bloodthirsty and violent and
dark. There are probably more boys with
that stuff. It’s too gothic thematically.
But do you have a favorite?
Besides Snow White and Cinderella, if I
could play any fairy-tale character… [it
would] definitely [be] Rapunzel. It’s a tie with
Cinderella and Rapunzel. My hair is growing.
Did you undergo special
training for this role?
I wanted to lose a lot of the
Thor
weight.
I spent two years putting on 20 to 30
pounds [for the movie]. I just didn’t want the
Huntsman to be that well fed. He should
be a bit more wiry. He liked to drink, and to
just run and run, and eat less.
Seeing all the weapons,
were there instances when
you injured yourself?
Not really. I was pretty lucky. There was
a fight scene we had to do and Kristen
injured me; she punched me in the nose.
She sort of swings a punch at me, and
I’m pretending to be hit. It was right off
skimming my nose. I said, “You don’t have
to say anything.” And then the next take,
bam. I was out. I was like, “Not the face,
not the face…”
Did you get insurance?
No. I thought it was a broken nose.
How did she react?
She freaked out a bit. She kept talking
about how proud she was that she had
knocked something out.
She seems strong enough.
She’s tiny, but that was a big punch. She
was like, “I’ve never hit anyone before.” I
was like, “I don’t believe it.”
So how do you find your
career now?
This is one of the times when I’m kind
