For regular long-haul travelers
,
rese ing your watch to a new time zone
will be a familiar part of the landing and
disembarkation ritual—but it needn’t
be. Potentially saving you the bother
are so-called “travel time” watches,
which come in various forms but are
united by the capability of displaying
more than one time zone at once.
This horological sub-genre has a long
history: The earliest dual time zone
watchwas produced by Tissot in 1853—
the year of the company’s founding—
decades before defined time zones were
formally adopted internationally. Its
display of two dials for two different
time zones set a precedent that
continues today, most simplywith
“GMT” watches that bear a second hour
hand for a different zone. Useful not
just for travelers but also those needing
to stay in touchwith people far away.
The pinnacle of the travel time genre,
however, is the world timer, which can
tell you the time in all 24 global time
zones at once. The ingenious world time
concept—inwhich the dial is ringed
with a rotating 24-hour scale, lining up
against the names of 24 destinations,
one fromeach time zone—first
appeared in the 1930s with the birth of
passenger aviation, but really came into
its own in the glamour years of
jet-se ing in the fi ies and sixties.
In 1953, to celebrate its centenary and
build on the legacy of that first
dual-time pocket watch, Tissot
produced a famously stylishworld
timer, the Navigator; and this year, while
celebrating its 160th birthday, it has
brought it back. The Heritage Navigator,
as the newwatch is titled, recreates the
look of the original, with an automatic
movement that’s chronometer-certified,
meaning it’s among themost accurate
mechanical movements you’ll find. With
this kind of retro-suave beauty on your
wrist, you’d be forgiven for sneaking a
self-congratulatory grin as youwatch
your fellowpassengers go through the
reset routine on landing.
