Westfield runs retail at United
Airlines terminals at Newark Liberty
(Terminal C) and George Bush Houston
Intercontinental (Terminals B and E). At
both locations it has recently upgraded
its offerings.
Cecci says, “In Houston E, celebrity
chef Cat Cora opened a restaurant last fall
and has been a big hit with passengers.
In Newark C, an outstanding retail lineup
features Coach, Hugo Boss and MAC, just
to name a few.”
Airport shopping is no longer just
about the traditional items. While liquor,
perfumes and cosmetics continue to
be big sellers, more recent trends show
airports developing a real sense of place.
It can be hard to tell one airport from
another at times, but regional and local
brands allow them to distinguish themselves and offer
something unique and interesting to travelers.
That is a key aim for Los Angeles International airport,
which is “putting the LA back into LAX” with a huge
retail redevelopment this year. The airport will open no
fewer than 60 new retail and dining outlets across four
terminals by the end of the year—many of them being
well-known local brands.
A prime example is the trendy fashion store Kitson
LA, recently opened at Los Angeles Terminal 7. The
shop, based on the original popular downtown store,
features a full range of clothing and accessories,
and makes a strong reference to its airport location
with photographs of celebrities wearing Kitson LA
accessories at the airport.
Further openings later this year will reinforce that
local flavor. In Terminal 7, outlets will include the
Wolfgang Puck Express restaurant, ¡Lotería! Grill by chef
Jimmy Shaw, and Seven Grand and BLD from chef Neal
