► DIE LAGE
Der Hippostila Saal ist im beliebten Park
Güell im Gracia Stadtteil von Barcelona
zu finden. Antoni Gaudí erbaute den Park
zwischen 1900-1914. Noch heute gilt
Gaudí als bahnbrechender Architekt und
Vertreter des katalanischen Modernis-
mus. Park Güell ist ein beliebter Stadt-
park und wurde 1984 zum UNESCOWelt-
kulturerbe erhoben.
► DIE ENTSTEHUNG
1878 lernte Gaudí den reichen Industriel-
len Eusebi Güell kennen, der sein langjäh-
riger Freund und Auftraggeber wurde. Ur-
sprünglich plante Güell einen Stadtgarten
mit 60 Villen bauen zu lassen, doch das
Projekt scheiterte schon im frühen Stadi-
um wegen fehlendem Interesse der Inve-
storen. Es wurden nur drei Häuser imPark
Güell gebaut, das Familienhaus der Güells,
Gaudís Wohnhaus (heute ein Museum)
und ein weiteres Wohnhaus.
► LOCATION
The Sala Hipóstila lies at the top of the
steps leading into Parc Güell, the
fantastically decorative park built by
Antoni Gaudí between 1900 and 1914.
The park, which is located in the hilly
district of Gracia and overlooks the city of
Barcelona, was declared a UNESCO world
heritage site in 1984. Its architect,
meanwhile, is still celebrated as an
architectural pioneer and advocate of
Catalan modernism today.
► DEVELOPMENT
Gaudí met his life-long friend Eusebi
Güell, who commissioned this project, in
1984. Originally the idea was to create a
garden city with 60 villas but the pair
struggled to find prospective buyers for
the villas. In the end only three were built:
the Güell family house, Gaudí’s own
house (now a museum) and a third
mansion, now inhabited by a local
architect.
