Easyjet Traveller January 2014 - page 25

When did you start coming here?
“I first came here in 2006, staying at
the Lapoint Surf Camp, which was
being run by Portuguese pro surfer
Alexandre Grilo. I fell in love with the
culture in Taghazout as well as the
surfing, in particular Anchor Point, the
most famous surf break around. I saw
a massive opportunity for Lapoint to
expand, so I persuaded Grilo to let me
be his partner. Lapoint was founded to
let people come and enjoy a real
Moroccan community and great
surfing in one place.”
What’s the appeal?
“On the right day, you can surf Anchor
Point for 2km, from one village to
another. It’s this perfect right-hand
point break and, once you’re on, it’s just
this beautiful smooth ride. I still love
getting up at sunrise and climbing over
the rocks to paddle out to it.”
Who comes here?
“Just 15 years ago, virtually no one
was in the water. But Taghazout has
become more and more famous, and
over time Anchor Point has become
probably the most famous surf break in
Morocco. That’s obviously meant more
people in the water – it’s now a mix of
locals, who’ve got into surfing in a big
way, and a growing number of
European visitors – though there are
enough waves to go round.”
What keeps you coming back?
“Aside from this break, it’s Taghazout
itself. It’s this beautiful town that has
held on to its traditional Berber culture
– you still get woken by morning
prayers at 5.30am, the fishermen
still go out in the same boats every
morning, and you still can’t drink any
alcohol in the cafés and restaurants
that look out over the sea. It’s the sort
of place where everyone smiles at you
and it’s totally safe – there’s a good vibe
all round. The flight from Europe is
surprisingly short, but it feels like a
world away.”
Sebastian co-runs Lapoint surf camps,
which provide food, regular day trips
and yoga classes.
