Firstly, I’d like to
take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy
New Year! I hope you’ve had a wonderful time
over the festive period.
Many of you will remember the volcanic
eruption in Iceland, which closed European
airspace in April 2010, causing more than 100,000
flights to be cancelled across Europe. I’m pleased
to let you know that we’ve been working in
partnership with Airbus and Nicarnica Aviation to
test AVOID, a new infrared flight warning system,
and have successfully proved that we are able to
detect and estimate the concentrations of volcanic
ash in the atmosphere.
This means is that if another big volcano erupts
in the future, this groundbreaking technology
should enable us to avoid the widespread airspace
closures of 2010. We plan to continue developing
the technology and hope to put it onto some of
our current aircraft by the end of 2014.
