“my alarm clock
goes off at all hours. It
can be as early as 3am if we have a 5am
report, but I get to sleep in if we have
flights departing during the evening.
I drive to work – being based at
London Luton means it only takes me
30 minutes to get to the airport.
“My day properly begins one
hour before the scheduled time of
departure, when all crew have to check
in. We have five minutes to check our
emails before our safety briefing, where
we introduce ourselves, go through
flight information and discuss that
day’s duty. The cabin manager will ask
each crew member one safety and
emergency procedure and one first-aid
question. This is to confirm that all crew
are up to date with all procedures.
“Crew then join the flight deck
(one captain and one first officer), who
provide flight information. We aim to be
at the aircraft 35 minutes prior to the
scheduled time of departure.
“We have to go through security
just like our passengers, then search
the aircraft: every row, seat pocket,
overhead locker, toilet and galley is
checked before any of our passengers
are boarded. We pride ourselves
on making everyone on board feel
welcome. After introducing the
team, doing the safety demonstration
and taking off, we start with various
on-board services, making sure we
remember to offer refreshments to the
flight deck as well as the passengers.
“What some people don’t know
is that we don’t leave the aircraft at
our destinations. During a typical
turnaround, we have 25 minutes
before we depart again, so it’s one of
our busiest times. Once a month you
might get to do a night stop, which is
a fantastic opportunity to visit some of
the great destinations we fly to.
“I do anything between two and six
flights a day. This means that in one day
I see between 500-600 passengers
and in one week operate 16-18 flights.
“Depending on what duty I’m
operating, I could be home in the
afternoon, or my shift can finish as late
as 3-4am if I’m on a night flight.
“I love working shifts, because it
means that I have days off in the week.
This is a great job for those who don’t
like to be bored.”
