Milan
Rome
Keren
€€€
(
7 Via Malpighi, +39 229 526 081
) This may
be one of a scattering of African restaurants in Italy’s
major cities, each a legacy of Mussolini’s colonisation of
Ethiopia and Eritrea, yet Keren holds it own. It serves up
innovative spicy beef, chicken and fish dishes.
Osteria La Cala
€€€€
(
63 Via Monte Nero, +39 254
121 899)
Definitely among the front runners for the best
fish restaurant in Milan, this cosy place follows traditional
Sardinian recipes brought over by the owner. Try the
starter of raw fish slices. Pricey, but too good to miss.
Nati Stanchi
(
51 Via Ascanio Sforza, +39 2837 8339
)
The name of this long-established bar in the
Navigli
(canals) district may translate as ‘born tired’, but trust us,
once the live music gets going, and you’ve knocked back a
couple of cocktails, you’ll be anything but sleepy.
It’s well worth taking a day out to
Piacenza
(
4B Vico
Due Porte a Toledo
), a peaceful city on the Po River about
65km south-east of Milan. Among the top sights are the
Duomo and the Palazzo Farnese.

Mario’s
€€€
(
53 Via del Moro, +39 658 038 09
) This
is one of the few family-run trattorias left in the heart
of trendy Trastevere. Go for the delicious ravioli and a
selection of vegetable
contorni
(side dishes). They also do
a wonderful peach pie for dessert.
Edy
€€
€€
(
4 Vicolo
del Babuino, +39 636 001 738
) An elegant establishment in
a pretty little alley between Piazza di Spagna and Piazza
del Popolo. It serves particularly good
tagliatelli alla greca
(pasta with tomatoes, aubergine, feta and olives).
Buccone
(19-20 Via Ripetta, +39 6361 2154) It may
be small in size, but the selection of wines – which sit
stacked on racks all the way up the walls – is mind-
boggling in this historic
enoteca
(wine bar). The few tables
fill up quickly though, so it’s best to book.
Tarquinia
was one of the most prestigious Etruscan
settlements of the 8th and 7th centuries BC. Visit tombs
and see elaborate wall paintings. You can take a train from
Termini, Ostiense or Trastevere stations.
