Illuminating the way
As the nights close in, here’s our pick of the best cycling lights for all roadwarriors
urban legend
MOON COMET W& R
£29
moon-sport.com
Surviving the urban jungle is largely
about being seen by others. These
funky stripes of light, available as a
front white and rear red light, £29 each,
succeed admirably. To navigate murky
towpaths or be more visible from the
side, take a look at the slightly meatier
Moon Meteor range – there’s a 200
lumens option that costs about £50.
power rider
EXPOSURE STRADA MK5
£249

Commuters aiming to carve out a path
between all the potholes on unlit roads
appreciate serious illumination – and
few lights are as serious as this. In
tests, it emitted more than 5,000
candela (meaning it’s as bright as
5,000 candles) above the horizontal
axis. This does risk dazzling drivers, so
good job the handlebar remote can dial
down all the power.
trail demon
MAGICSHINE MJ-880
£149
magicshineuk.co.uk
To fling your frame down a gnarled
mountain at breakneck pace you need
a trail light potent enough to punch
through the dark of the bowels of
Hades. This MagicShine is a stellar
option. Though its beam is too broad
and bright for road use, as it could
dazzle other road users, it’s ideal for
off-road riding.
green light
SUPERNOVA E3 PRO 2
£149
supernova-lights.com
Why bother with batteries when you
can get a cool dynamo model powered
by the sweat of your brow? This one
is surprisingly practical and, like all
German models, nearly all the light
is directed onto the road. The snag is
that you must first invest £100 to fit a
dynamo hub to your bike to convert all
that cycling into powering the light.
