FOR CITY
SLICKERS
PRIMAVERA
SOUND
22-26
May
THE LOWDOWN
Not many festivals can marry a city
break in Europe’s coolest party locale,
a weekend at the beach and a line-up of
the hippest new bands, but Primavera
Sound Festival in Barcelona manages
just that. Indeed, it’s been feeding its
forward-thinking mix of indie bands
and encores from legendary acts to the
in-the-know crowd for 12 years now.
THE ENTERTAINMENT
When the crowd looks as cool as the
acts playing, it’s no wonder Jarvis
Cocker chose to wiggle his snake hips
at Primavera for Pulp’s first come-back
show in 2011. A year earlier, in 2010,
cult US rockers the Pixies performed
and the Pet Shop Boys put on a giant
disco. But the main pull of Primavera
is checking out new acts that none of
your friends will have even heard of
until the end of the year. Highlights this
summer are hot new bands Disclosure
and Savages, with established acts Blur
and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – oh,
and did we mention the Wu-Tang Clan
are also stopping by? Woo hoo.
THE VIBE
The festival itself is set at the
Instagram-friendly Parc del Forum, an
open-air amphitheatre-like venue
packed with skinny-jean-clad
20-
somethings clambering around the
site on a heady mix of beer, tequila
shots and sea air. With no camping,
most people stay in cheap apartments
nearby, so after the late 3am finish,
there’s the perfect hangover cure of
eating some tapas in the city, then
sleeping it off at the beach – before
getting up and doing it all again.
DO SAY
“
Yeah, I blogged about these guys
aaages
ago.”
DON’T SAY
“
Who? Never heard of them.”
INSIDER TIP
Make friends with a band and blag an
invite to a room or the rooftop pool at
the Hotel Barcelona Princess, which is
opposite the festival site. All the best
unofficial after-parties happen there.
