THE LOWDOWN
Less a weekend festival, more a way
of life, this Suffolk institution an hour
from London drops an all-encompassing
culture bomb of live music, comedy,
theatre, art installations, literary events,
dance and other creative goings on,
including a new partnership with BBC
Radio 6. It’s billed as the UK’s leading
festival for music and the arts, and is a
sprawling wonderland for those who
look for something more from a festival
than nursing a warm pint while watching
another Top 40 act.
THE ENTERTAINMENT
Spread out over 15 huge arenas in the
greenery of the Henham Park estate,
listen to music from Bloc Party, Alt-J
and Kraftwerk, plus trance-floor filler
Hot Chip and comedian Daniel Kitson
cracking some funnies. This year’s
theme is ‘What Defines Me?’, so deep
thinkers – or those emboldened with
Dutch courage – are invited to take
part in The Faraway Forest, a science
hub that will probe the grey matter by
day and turn into a 1970s New York
party by night.
THE VIBE
It’s a slightly left-field crowd, but a
friendly one, which makes it the perfect
family affair, and the action kicks off
early at 9am. Young-at-heart mums
sing along to Florence + The Machine,
and real-ale loving dads get stuck in
chatting about astrophysics with the
likes of last year’s speaker Professor
Brian Cox, while first-time festival
teenagers take profile pictures by the
art installations, before everyone meets
to eat at one of the gourmet food stalls.
DO SAY
“
Did you know Professor Brian Cox
used to be the keyboardist in the 90s
band D:Ream?”
DON’T SAY
“
I’m off back to the tent for an
afternoon nap.”
INSIDER TIP
Keep your ear to the ground for the
secret midday sets on Sunday. Previous
years have seen early birds rewarded
with Radiohead’s Thom Yorke.
