Ice Ice Baby
Undoubtedly the coolest event in
London, the Ice Sculpture Festival
in Canary Wharf sees some of the
world’s greatest artists tackle giant
blocks of ice in a battle against the
clock – and each other – to produce
incredible flights of frozen fantasy.

Go Dutch
Where do festival fans and industry
insiders head in the off-season? How
about Groeningen, near Amsterdam,
where more than 300 new bands
descend for four days of Eurosonic
Noorderslag this month. The name
might be a mouthful, but finding
something you want to listen to here
is easy. At the very least, it’ll keep your
cravings at bay until summer.

TRAVEL TRENDS
We’ve raided the latest issue of Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel
to bring you our top tips for 2013
TOP
1
Geo-thermal delights
We’ve said it before, but
iceland
is still our most bonkersly brilliant
destination. Lonely Planet has it in its top 10 for this year for, “mind-bending
scenery, platefuls of delicious lamb and sincere local hospitality.” All true.
2
An island tour
No.1 region for exploring this year, according to the great LP, is
corsica
–
a place of “epic beauty”. It’s on our list too, not least for the 100th
Tour de France, which will start there in June.
3
Not just deserts
The
negev
region of Israel, just south of Tel Aviv, is on the LP hot list for its
“
eco-villages, spa resorts and wineries”, which are turning this formerly
desolate moonscape into a look-again tourist destination. Book now.
4
Post-Christmas Turkey
Many people, says Lonely Planet, head to
turkey
but don’t see much be-
yond “Istanbul and the coastal resorts”. Time your visit to coincide with the
country’s hosting of the Mediterranean Games in June.
5
New year, newdestinations
FromMarch, we’ll be flying to
moscow
for a closer look at the
Kremlin, and to
kalamata
in Greece – star of the Pelloponese
and home to some of the world’s best olives.
