After a three-month
siege led by Afonso
Henriques, the first
king of Portugal, the
city of some 154,000
citizens is reconquered
by Christian forces.
1497
Vasco da Gama
departs from what
is now Belém on a
momentous voyage
that leads to his
discovery of the sea
route to India.
1755
At 10am on
1 November, the city
is destroyed by a huge
earthquake, followed
by fires and a tsunami,
which kill at least
40,000 people.
1908
On 1 February, King
Carlos I and his heir are
murdered in Praça do
Comércio. This regicide
is the catalyst for the
nation becoming a
republic two years later.

The one-time Roman
metropolis of Felicitas
Julia is seized by
Muslim forces made up
of Arabs and Berbers.
It stays under their rule
