Varsity Hotel

From its hillside position, this palace in
the commune of Frascati has stunning
views over nearby Rome. Dating back
to the mid-16th century, the villa was
an opulent private residence for gentry
before being transformed into a hotel in
1996, and all the luxuries that a count or
duke could ever desire are still in place.

Like estate agents, hoteliers have their
own special language in which, too
often, “boutique” means nothing more
than “poky”. It’s a delight, therefore,
to find that when the term is applied
to this Cambridge hotel, it means a
small-but-perfectly formed example of
understated opulence.
With nods to the city’s intellectual
heritage, this neat little charmer comes
from a group of Cambridge alumni who
opened its doors in 2010. Their affection
for the city is evident in the college-
inspired names of its 48 rooms and
four Masters’ Suites – St John’s, Jesus,
Trinity and Clare – which have four-
poster beds and 270° picture windows.
Appropriately, the hotel’s crowning
glory is its summer roof terrace, where
sunglassed urbanites sip G&Ts, while,
conveniently for guests, adjoining
buildings house the buzzing River Bar
Steakhouse and Aveda spa
Just 40 minutes from Stansted
airport, this very British bolthole
is becoming the go-to place in
the university town for stylish
surroundings, friendly service and a
real
boutique experience.
