What could be more natural an inspiration for a centre of
aviation than bird life? This airport, designed by Spain’s
most celebrated architect, Santiago Calatrava, is formed
from two sinuous white concrete wings that soar up to
meet at a raised tip at the centre, earning the building
the nickname
La Paloma
(The Dove).

This dishy-looking terminal is built around a central
rotunda, above which floats a concrete bowl that lets in
light and air. Designed by Moshe Safdie as a practical
solution to growing international traffic, the airy building
surrounds a courtyard garden, planted with native
species mentioned in the Bible, while the adjoining
passage is clad in the same stone as theWailingWall.
