CHOOSING A WINE
can be tricky.
While it seems obvious that a €200
bottle will be extraordinary, it is much
harder to find a quality wine for a more
modest amount. Thankfully, the Peñin
Guide to SpanishWines awards every
bottle it rates a score of three to five
stars, according to its value for money.
The Peñin Guide is the foremost
authority on the Spanish wine
industry. Every bottle is rated using
a 50 to 100 point quality scale, which
is calculated by assessing a range of
characteristics: the wine’s general
colour and appearance, the aroma and
bouquet, the flavour and finish, and
the potential for future development.
Any bottle whose price is below €5
and scores between 85 and 89 (rated
‘outstanding’) is awarded a five-star
rating on the value-for-money scale.
The entire range of Viña Albali
wines have received this prestigious
rating. Produced since 1962, in the
Felix Solis winery in Valdepeñas
(located south of Madrid), many
varieties of Viña Albali have achieved
top ratings, become bestsellers and
been awardedmedals in international
competitions year after year.
TheMundus Vini International
Wine Awards is a competition held

TASTE OF
VICTORY
ViñaAlbali have built a reputation for producing
world championwines at an affordable price
recognised wine competition, with
more than 5,500 entries each year. The
awards offer producers, wine-growers,
importers and consumers a forum in
which they can compare wines and
receive help when deciding which to
buy. The wines are assessed using a
mathematical scheme in which they
receive points for their appearance,
smell, taste, and the harmony
and overall impression, up to the
maximum of 100. Each wine is tasted
by seven jurors, of whom three must
be German and four from abroad.
No more than a third of products are
given awards. Viña Albali Reserva
was the goldmedallist at Mundus Vini
as the Best DryWine in its category.
