rips tomy local swimming pool had left me
feeling confident but nevertheless here I am,
floundering around in the open ocean, wishing I’d
taken the trainingmore seriously. Ahead of me,
just visible through a pair of fogged-up plastic goggles, is a
pine-covered lump of land called Kaprije – my target in this
3.2km-long Adriatic crossing, while just behind, and gaining
rapidly, are a couple of ladies at least 20 years my senior.
I’mcold, tired and paranoid about what might be lurking
beneath the rippling surface, but they seemunaffected –
and, unlike this unfit specimen, they don’t look like they’ll
be stopping any time soon.

islands and outcrops that make up the Šibenik archipelago,
