Shayona
€15
(54-62 Meadow Garth, NW10,
tel: 020 8965 3365) As a food experience,
Shayona is about as sin-free as it gets: not only is
this vegetarian, booze-free restaurant attached
to a temple, but it also follows a strict
sattvic
diet
(Sanskrit for “purifying”). But despite forbidding
onions and garlic, the kitchen doesn’t compromise
on flavour, churning out mouth-watering – and
generously sized – dishes, like crispy deep-fried
mushrooms stuffed with paneer and cauliflower, and
cassava chips in a tangy chilli-and-tamarind sauce.
The Foundry
€30
(3-7 Delancey Street Camden
Town London NW1 7NL, tel: 020 7387 5959). This
cafe/jazz bar off Camden’s Parkway doesn’t just
provide great repast but a life lesson – never judge
the food by the menu. What looks like unassuming
café grub on the page, sings and dances its way
onto your plate, with tea-smoked duck breast a
sweet-savoury flavour explosion, while the “gourmet
seafood ploughmans” is a riot of delicious fishy
flavours. More astonishing is the fact that
everything from the breads to pastries to the
London
inventive ice-cream flavours (chocolate and
lemongrass, anyone?) is handmade on site by
The Foundry’s Sicilian chefs.
Reform Social and Grill
€70
(Mandeville Place,
City of Westminster,W1U, tel: 020 7224 1624).
Part of the newly opened Mandeville hotel, this
restaurant is too nice to be left for its staying guests.
Bold British cuisine, big flavours and generous
portions are the name of the game here, so come
hungry. Duck scotch egg, steak with snails and
bone-marrow and Bakewell tart with lashings of extra
custard is typical fare: finish that lot and you might
need to book in upstairs.
Radfest
(Hackney Downs Studio, Amhurst
Terrace) Even by the standards, of London’s
hippest locale, events don’t come more self-
consciously arch than the yearly Radfest on 18
August (£15). Run by DIY record crew Sexbeat, this
all-dayer in artfully grimey environs will be sure to
attract the cream of the east end’s hipster tribes
with a bill that includes indie darlings Veronica Falls.
Skinny jeans are a must.
