buy anything at the
Jaffa Flea Market,
experiencing the

atmosphere is a
souvenir in itself.
It stays open until
11pm on Thursday
nights in summer,
with three areas
selling antique
furniture, ornaments
and second-hand
curiosities. Get
ready to rummage.

summer, there’s
nothing worse than
trying to experience
a city’s culture amid
sweaty, bustling

a helpful solution:
simply explore at

LAMEZIA
Virtually unheard of
outside of its home
in Calabria, ’nduja
sausage is a cross
between a pâté and
a salami, made with
local peperoncino
chillis. Commonly
eaten on toast or to
spice up stews, it’s
so delicious, there’s
even a festival
dedicated to it –
held on 8 August
in Spilinga, 70km
south of Lamezia.

KEFALONIA
Head to Markopoulo
in Kefalonia on
14-15 August for
the bizarre – yet
endearing – Snake
Festival. Villagers
use sacks and jars
to transport snakes
from the island’s
dangerous roads
into the sanctuary
of the local church.
A whole event, with
feasts and markets,
has sprung up
around the tradition.
