PISA
The sensational medieval city
of Siena is amust-do on any Tuscan
break, but particularly on 16August,
when its Piazza del Campo fills from
floor to rafters with crowds. The
lure? Il Palio, a desperately exciting
horse-racing contest between
the city’s
contrade
(districts),
representatives of which compete to
raise a victory banner (the palio) by
galloping round the piazza. It’s fast,
furious and fairly dangerous – ergo,
excellent viewing – but don’t worry
if youmiss the actual race. Arrive up
to four days earlier for parades, lavish
meals and pre-race trials.
