Kaffee Burger
(60Torstrasse,Mitte,

– a pub whose look hasn’t changedmuch since the
Berlin
Communist era - hosts intimate concerts most
nights of the week and turns into a pretty
raucous dance club after midnight, especially at
the monthly Russendisko parties.
The Dussmann Culture Department
Store
Home to a two-story English
bookshop, a decent selection of books about Berlin
as well as a huge classical music shop in the
basement. (90 Friedrichstrasse, Mitte)
August is a slowmonth for theatre and
opera, but not for dance. Every year,
the renowned Tanz imAugust festival highlights
cutting-edge choreography from around the world in
several venues across the city. From 10–25 August
(tanzimaugust.de).
Alexanderplatz
, the former
commercial centre of East Berlin, is a concrete
jungle, but not without its charms. Alongside
plenty of big shops, the imposing 365mTV tower
overlooks it all and an ascent to the revolving
restaurant 200m above the ground is well worth the
wait. Another gem of socialist design in the area is
the retro, space-aged “World Clock” showing the time
around the world.
