Staying Blue
MÁLAGA
The whitewashed towns of Andalucía are
famed for being, well, white. However, Júzcar, near
Málaga, has changed its hue and visitors have soared
from about 300 to 80,000. The town was sponsored to
paint itself blue for the filming of the 3D Smurfs movie,
but now its denizens have voted to keep the new colour.
“In a time of recession, it’s no small thing that we have
improved our tourist numbers,” says its ecstatic mayor.
