Business
BILBAO
Shopkeepers searching for ways
to survive the recession should look for
inspiration to Mungia, 20km fromBilbao.
Here, brother and sister fishmongers
Ruben and Marga Rios have come up
the idea of selling fresh fish from a
vending machine. Buying the freshly
caught seafood fromBilbaomarket in
the morning, they clean, prepare and
package it before loading the machine.
Apparently, the innovation has become
very popular, especially with young
people on weekend nights out.Well, it
makes a change from a kebab.
Return to
the Island
NANTES
Mont Saint-Michel – the
magical place that Victor Hugo
said was to France “what the Great
Pyramid is to Egypt” – has for
years been blighted by a large car
park, part of the causeway that has
bound it to the mainland since the
1870s. Now, due to the destructive
silting up of the bay, the decision
has been made to allow the mount
to become an island once more.
So, on 28 April, the car park will
close and visitors will have to leave
their vehicles on the mainland,
either walking the 2.5km across to
the island or taking a horse-drawn
coach. By 2014, the causeway will
be replaced by a bridge (as shown)
and the mount will once again be
an island.
