ancer is a leading cause of death
worldwide; it is predicted that by
2030, 11
million deaths will be
cancer-related, with 70% of them
occurring in low- and middle-income countries.
In 1998, the non-governmental organisation
International Network for Cancer Treatment and
Research (INCTR) was created to address this
increasing burden in developing countries.
Working together with local colleagues, the
Belgium-based NGO aims to build capacity for
cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis,
treatment and palliative care. To improve access
to care, INCTR has developed protocols to
standardise treatment approaches that are
feasible and affordable in local settings. A
recent success is the treatment of over 500
children with Burkitt lymphoma in seven African
countries. Prior to the start of this project, the
survival rate was estimated to be less than
10%;
now, that figure has climbed to 68%.
Dr Martin Ogwang, of St Mary’s hospital
Lacor in Uganda, praises the NGO’s work: “In
northern Uganda, the majority of the people
live on less than a dollar a day and cannot
afford to travel to faraway and costly oncology
centres. Thanks to the INCTR project, we are
able to provide a high-quality standard of care
for free to all our Burkitt lymphoma patients.”

e cancer est la première cause de mortalité dans le monde ; on
prévoit que d’ici 2030, 11 millions de décès seront liés au cancer,
et de ce nombre, 70% surviendront dans les pays à faibles et
moyens revenus.
En 1998, l’organisation non gouvernementale International Network for
Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) fut créée pour contrer ce fardeau
croissant dans les pays en développement. En collaboration avec des collègues
locaux, l’ONG basée en Belgique aide au renforcement des capacités de
prévention du cancer, de détection précoce, de diagnostic, de traitement et de
mise en place de soins palliatifs. En vue d’améliorer l’accès aux soins, l’INCTR
a développé des protocoles visant à normaliser des méthodes de traitements,
réalisables et abordables dans les régions concernées.
Et ce projet fonctionne : le traitement de plus de 500 enfants souffrant du
Lymphome de Burkitt, dans sept pays africains, en est un exemple récent.
Avant le démarrage du programme, le taux de survie était estimé à moins de

un chiffre qui aujourd’hui se monte à 68%.
Le Dr. Martin Ogwang, du St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor en Ouganda, loue
l’action de l’ONG : « Dans le nord de l’Ouganda, la majorité de la population
vit avec moins d’un dollar par jour et ne peut se permettre le déplacement
jusqu’aux centres d’oncologie, lointains et coûteux. Grâce à l’initiative de
l’INCTR, nous sommes en mesure de fournir gratuitement des soins de qualité
à tous nos patients atteints du Lymphome de Burkitt. »

anker is wereldwijd een belangrijke doodsoorzaak: in 2030 zullen
naar schatting 11 miljoen sterfgevallen, waarvan 70% in landen met
lage en gemiddelde inkomens, verband houden met kanker.
In 1998 werd de non-gouvernementele organisatie International
Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) opgericht om deze toenemende
last in ontwikkelingslanden aan te pakken. In samenwerking met lokale collega’s
wil deze ngo, die in België is gevestigd, mogelijkheden voor preventie, vroege
detectie, diagnose, behandeling en palliatieve zorg in geval van kanker ontwikkelen.
Om de toegankelijkheid van de zorg te verbeteren, heeft INCTR protocollen
opgesteld om te komen tot standaardbehandelmethoden die haalbaar en betaalbaar
zijn in lokale situaties.
Een recent succes is de behandeling van meer dan vijfhonderd kinderen met
Burkittlymfoom in zeven Afrikaanse landen. Vóór de start van dit project werd het
overlevingspercentage op minder dan 10% geraamd. Nu is dat cijfer gestegen tot 68%.
Dr. Martin Ogwang van het St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Oeganda prijst het
werk van de ngo: “In Noord-Oeganda moeten de meeste mensen rondkomen
van minder dan één dollar per dag. Zij kunnen het zich niet veroorloven om naar
verafgelegen en dure oncologiecentra te reizen. Dankzij het INCTR-project kunnen
we gratis zorg van een hoge kwaliteitsstandaard bieden aan al onze patiënten
met Burkittlymfoom.”
