It’s all in the hands: that’s the secret
of
Kiss & Cry
, (
theatrenational.be)
a magical piece of theatre that’s in
Brussels for a repeat run in November
and January at the Théâtre National.
Created by filmmaker Jaco Van
Dormael and choreographer Michèle
Anne De Mey, it’s a 90 minute show of
spellbinding dance that uses only the
hands of the performers to narrate a
story of lost love. Hands come alive
one by one to evoke mystery, whimsy,
sadness and romance, among a
miniature set and some inventive
scenery, to a soundtrack featuring
Handel, Vivaldi, Gershwin and John
Cage. Performed live, it’s projected on
to a screen so you won’t miss the
details. It’s beautifully imagined and
performed. One not to be missed.
Tuck in
Christmas is coming; the goose is
getting fat… And it won’t just be the
goose these coming months in
Brussels, where a host of tempting
food events are rounding off the
Brusselicious year of gastronomy
(
visitbrussels.be). First among them is
November’s
Chocolate Week
,
which
offers visitors guided tours of workshops,
tasting sessions and other activities to
get a real taste of everyone’s favourite
Belgian souvenir. The opener to this
week is the
Belgian Chocolate Fair
at Tour & Taxis, a vast former port
warehouse, where there will be a
host of cooking demonstrations, art
exhibitions, food tastings and kids’
activities exploring the history and
mystery of the cocoa bean. But if it’s
savoury you crave, then the
Chippie
Festival
might be more up your street.
You’ll have smelt them in the streets
and maybe already dunked a few in
some mayonnaise, but the humble
frite
is being celebrated this month in an
original – and as-yet unrevealed – style
by the people behind Brusselicious.
Keep your eyes peeled; it’s bound to
be delicious.
Wonderland
Finally, Christmas wouldn’t be
Christmas in Brussels without the
Winter Wonders market
,
which takes
over a chunk of the city centre for the
duration of the festive season. Begin
your tour with a traditional Nativity
scene and spectacular sound and light
show in the Grand’Place – a beautiful

Ici, tout est question de doigté : c’est
en cela que réside le secret de
Kiss
and Cry
,
un spectacle tout simplement
magique, qui sera joué à Bruxelles en
novembre et janvier au Théâtre
National. Créée en tandem par le
réalisateur Jaco Van Dormael et la
chorégraphe Michèle Anne De Mey,
cette pièce envoûtante de 90 minutes,
utilise exclusivement les mains et les
doigts des danseurs pour narrer une
histoire d’amours perdus.
Kiss
and Cry
vous ouvre grand les fenêtres
de l’imaginaire.
A dévorer
Noël approche à grands pas ; encore
un peu de temps pour engraisser la
dinde...
Belgian Chocolate Fair
,
à Tour &
Taxis, marquera le début de cette
semaine

La vaste gare maritime sera

square at the best of times, and even
more so when covered in snow – and
follow the trail of chalets and the
smell of roasting chestnuts across to
Place Sainte-Catherine, where a big
wheel and ice-skating rink are installed
each year. Strap on your skates and
join in, or watch from the sidelines
with a hot chocolate spiked with
warming rum, or one of the numerous
local wines, brews and spirits on offer.
The market is open all day, but it’s best
enjoyed in the evening when it is
twinkling with lights. You can pick up
quirky gifts, try international cuisine or
wander through the city centre soaking
up the Christmas atmosphere. Wrap up
warm and have a merry Christmas!
