When 25-year veteran flight attendant Rosa
Alvarado is not helping passengers in flight,
she’s helping passengers on the ground via a
servicecalledSocial Transportation forSeniors
(STS), anonprofit organizationdesigned todeliver senior citizens to social appointments.
A fewyearsago, asubcommitteeofaUnitedWay initiative in thecityofNorthRichlandHills,
Texas, began a service to help isolated seniors get to social destinations such as the senior
center, the library, thegrocerystoreor thebank.Partneringwith thecity, STSwascreatedand
soonbecameanonprofit organization.
Learningof theservicewhenhermotherneededaride,Alvaradobeganhelping toschedule
thedrivers for pickupanddrop-off. “It fillsahugeneed in the community,” she says.
Alvaradonow serves as the volunteer executivedirector for STS, recruitingand scheduling
drivers, sometimes even doing the driving herself. “She’s the heart and soul of the service,”
saysFayeBeaulieu, regional director ofUnitedWayNortheast inTarrant County, Texas.
Alvarado,whohasamaster’sdegree insocialwork, saysgettingseniorsout of isolationand into
thecommunity iscritical to theirwellness. She tellsof oneseniorwho—prior tohearingabout STS
—waspayinga taxi service$40 twiceaweek fora ride to visit hiswife inanAlzheimer’scarecenter.
Alvarado’s community appreciates her commitment and dedication. In 2011 she was named a
Northeast Tarrant ChamberHometownHero for herworkwitholder adults.

Fourteen teenageamputeepatientsof Tex-
asScottishRiteHospital forChildrenhit the
slopesof Colorado thispast February. This
is the31st year for theall-expenses-paid
trip,which issupportedbygenerousTexas
ScottishRiteHospital forChildrendonors
andair transportationprovidedbyAmerican
Airlines. The youngpatientsparticipated in
aski adventure featuringactivities tailored
specifically for them.
The teenswent skiingandsnowboard-
ingatWinterPark’sNational SportsCenter
for theDisabled (NSCD), oneof theworld’s
largest outdoor therapeutic-recreation
facilities. The tripallowed thepatients the
opportunity tohave funwhile fosteringa
senseof self-confidence, independenceand
discovery.
This is theseventhconsecutive year that
AmericanAirlines, anofficial sponsor of
the trip, providedair transportation for the
teens,medical staff andchaperones. Travel
wasarranged throughMiles forKids in
Need—part of theAmericanAirlinesKids
inNeedprogram,whichprovidessupport
for a varietyof purposes related to thewell-
beingof childrenand their families.

tively, todaily.
