Flyingagainst thewind, theUniversidadSanFranciscodeQuitowasborn inEcuador’scapitalcityonSeptember1,1988.
Until then, virtuallyallhighereducation inEcuadorand indeed inmuchofLatinAmericahadbeenstrictlycompartmen-
talized inpublicuniversities;collegestudentsrarelytookcoursesoutsideoftheirdepartmentsandactuallydeclaredtheir
majorswhilestill inhighschool.
IncontrastUSFQ’s founder,SantiagoGangotena,dreamedofaprivate,non-denominationaluniversitythatwouldbreak
thatmold. Beginningwith122studentsandgrowing tomore than5,000 today,USFQ focusesona liberal artseducation
