L
astmonth, Dallas’sAT&T
PerformingArts Center
made its debut, marking
the completion of the city’s
30-year plan for cultural
dominance byway of a68-
acre, 19-block arts district.
Among the area’s culturally
refined institutions you’ll
find theDallasMuseum of
Art (with a23,000-plus
collection), theMorton
H.MeyersonSymphony
Center, the renowned
Nasher SculptureCenter, the
Trammell andMargaret Crow
Collection of AsianArt, the
Booker T.WashingtonHigh
School for thePerforming and
Visual Arts (ofwhichNorah
Jones is an alumna), and,
finally, as its crowning jewel,
theAT&TPerformingArts
Center— a$354million, 10-
acremultivenue site formusic,
opera, theater, anddance that
rivals evenNewYorkCity’s
LincolnCenter. The complex
features a2,200-seat opera
house, a600-seat theater,
theAnnetteStraussArtist
Square for outdoor concerts
and events, a performance
hall for the city’s various arts
organizations, and to tie it all
together, the lush surrounds
of Sammons Park.With the
opening of the new center,
Dallas also takes the top
prize of being theworld’s
first city to have buildings by
four Pritzker Prize–winning
architects in one square block.
Looks like the 30-year plan
was a good one; Dallas just
took center stage. And it’s
staying there.
