Asachildgrowingup inPuertoRico, JuanCarlos“Caco”
Rivera,nowaramp-servicesupervisor forAmericanAir-
lines inSanJuan,wouldwatch theJerryLewisMuscular
Dystrophy Association (MDA) telethon each Labor Day
weekend and see pictures of children attendingMDA summer camp. The camps intrigued him, somuch
so thatwhena friend incollege invitedhim tovolunteerat acamp inPuertoRico, hegladlyaccepted.Now,
more than25 years later, he remainsadedicatedand tireless volunteer forMDAcauses, includingserving
for thepast 10 yearsasdirector of anMDAsummer camp inPuertoRico. Asdirector, Riveraarranges for
campvolunteers, obtainssupplies, and recruitssponsorsso that 65childrenages6 to19canenjoyaweek
alongsidekids in similar circumstances. “You learn somuch from the children,” saysRivera. “We take so
much for granted.When youdo things for them, and they smileat you, it’soverwhelming. I love that.”
The children enjoy their time with Rivera as well, some of which is spent doingmorning exercises,
whichhavecome tobeknownas“Cacoaerobics.”Rivera’spresencealsohelps thekidsemotionally.
“Oneboy said tome, ‘Caco, the thing I likemost about you iswhen I feel pain, youalwaysmakeme
smile.Andyoumakeme feel likeanequal.’”Riverasays that it’s that typeof one-on-one interaction
with the children thatmakesworkingwith theMDA soappealing.
In addition to his camp work, Rivera volunteers at various MDA activities throughout the year,
usuallymore than30 inall. Heevenmet hiswife, alsoa longtimeMDA volunteer, at anMDAevent.
Despiteabusyschedule, Rivera isnot about tostopworking for thechildren. “I’ll keep volunteering
withMDAuntilmy last breath,”he says.
