gallons of fuel combined. That level of fuel con-
servation will reduce the amount of carbon di-
oxide discharged into the atmosphere by more
than 1.4 million tons a year. By using electric
groundequipment rather than internal combus-
tion engines at more than 25 airports, we’ll re-
duce nitrogen oxide emissions as well —more
than three tons a day at our Dallas/Fort Worth
hub alone. We set a goal to improve the fuel ef-
ficiency of our fleet, through a variety of mea-
sures, bymore than20percent by 2020.
GettingQuieter
Our customers care about noise reduction in
their communities too. Several years ago, we
removed some of the noisiest aircraft from our
fleet, andover thenext few years, wehope toget
even quieter when 47 new-generation aircraft
aredue tobeadded to thefleet, replacingolder,
noisier models. We’re also reducing noise by
using high-speed tractors to taxi aircraft rather
than running the engines andby adjusting take-
off procedures.
At American Airlines, our fundamental mis-
sion is tosafely transport people todestinations
throughout theworld.Weare increasingly com-
mitted to ensuring that we fulfill that mission
in an environmentally responsible way. We re-
cently issued our first environmental report in
fiveyears, andduring thosefiveyears, ourentire
focus was on turning around our company in a
very difficult financial time.We’vepublished the
report onourwebsite, AA.com, for all to see.

The biggest airline in theworld is doing its best
to leave thesmallest footprint possible.Wehave
more work to do in this area, but we wanted to
provide our customers with an analysis of our
current environmental impact to let them know
whatwehavedoneandcontinue todo to improve
our environmental sustainability.Hereare just a
fewof theareasdiscussed in the report:
ReducingEmissions
Burning fossil fuels—suchas jet fuel—creates
greenhouse gas emissions. Though the airline
industry contributes only two percent of global
carbon dioxide emissions, we are nonetheless
working vigorously to reduce the amount of
fuel we consume. Conservation saves us a lot
ofmoney, to be sure, but equally importantly, it
alsohelps to improveair quality.
This year, American Airlines and American
Eagle are expected to save about 146 million

Good environmental stewardship means mak-
ing themost of our resourcesby recycling rather
than by disposing of materials in landfills. As
outlined in the Environmental Responsibility
Report, several activitiesat Americanare saving
the companymoney and saving the earth. A re-
cyclingprogramat companyheadquarterssaved
the equivalent of nearly 4,300 trees and more
than one million kilowatt-hours of energy. Our
move frompaper tickets toelectronic ticketshas
made flyingmore convenient for our customers
and has helped reduce our paper consumption
by95percent over the last 10 years.
