When Jerome Hill was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes
in2004, hewasdepressedbut not altogether surprised;
his father had been battling diabetes for more than 25
years. But when Hill’s five-year-old daughter, Jordan,
was diagnosed with diabetes just ninemonths later, it became Hill’smission to help find a cure for the
disease. “As a parent, youwould take on anything for your child to be healthy,” saysHill, an employee of
AmericanBeaconAdvisors, a sister company to AmericanAirlines. “Mywife, Amy, and I knewwe had to
help in someway and feel likeweweremaking some sort of difference.”

in theUnitedStatesarediagnosedwith type1diabetes, and, asHill explains, parentscanbeoverwhelmed
at first in handling the disease and adjusting to the new dietary requirements and daily routines.
(Hill’s daughter requires four shots of insulin a day andmust have her blood sugar checked six to
nine timesdaily.) “Asaparent, you’re inshock, and it can takeseveralmonths toget intosomekind
of normalcy,”saysHill. “Whatmywifeand I have tried todo is tohelpother familiesget through the
shock, bondwith them, and let themknow they’renot alone. It’s volunteeringwith yourheart.”
Though there isnocure fordiabetes,Hill takesapositive viewof hispersonal healthsituation. “I
feel blessed to only have diabetes,” he says. “And inmy case, it’s givenme the opportunity to help
educateothersand touch the livesof childrenand their families.”
